I want to try and make a CD-i emulator and need a copy of Philips'
"Green Book" (3122 783 0047 1) standard. It's also called the Compact
Disc Interactive Full Functional Specification. If anyone has or can
get this for me I would be really appreciative. Hope to hear from someone.

Hi,

Are you serious ?
Several came before you but they never really made a full blown CD-i
emulator (at least not that I know of)
It surprises me that there is still interest in this ?

I don't think you will find the spec unless you find somebody to illegally
send you his (/company's) copy as (if memory serves me right) you need to
pay money to Philips (and associates) to legally obtain this spec.

For all kinds of resources you might want to check out this site :

I checked the IP&S website and found this document :

http://www.licensing.philips.com/includes/download.php?id=162&filename=162.pdf

Green book can be ordered for 150 $US (Soft (pdf) copy sent on CD I think)
That's not that much ... if you think you have a market for an emulator then
this is not that big of an investment.

Peter

Peter,

Glad to see someone here still reads this corner of the usenets. I
know lots of people started and failed on this and I guess that's why
I'm interested. I have a Sony IVO-011 CD-i portable and think CD-i was
really cool, but nowadays no one remembers it. To jog their memory I
figured an emulator was the way to go. I intend for this to be a free
product and doubt any money could be made from it so I don't want to
spend anything but time on it. That's why I'm interested in getting the
green book free. I'm going to jump on mIRC and try to hunt it down
(keep your fingers crossed). If I can't find it I may actually lay out
the money and try to create an actual full-scale cross-platform CD-i
emulator then setup a relationship with Microware to license the CDRTOS
ROM for inclusion, but I would prefer this to be a small scale hobby for
me that is free for everyone to enjoy.

Hello,

I am from "Le Monde du CD-i" team (www.lemondeducdi.fr.st) and I have sent a
mail to Philips. I am waiting for an answer about any ways to get the Green
Book.

I want to let you know that we are absolutly supporting you in this
emulator.
http://cdi.fanclub.nederland.web1000.com/indexmain.htm
It's the Nederland CD-i Fanclub (associated to "Le Monde du CD-i" and
"Blackmoon Project").

I will let you know any news from Philips.

Good luck!

Hi guy,

Thanks. I suspect Philips will be less than forthcoming with the
Green Book as it is a source of income for them. It's OK. I think I
have enough info to get started. At this point I am going to work from
.bin files of discs because I don't believe that modern CD-Roms allow
bit level access to CDs and I don't want to have to write CD-Rom drivers
(yuck!). My first project is get the read/route commands functions
working. This would allow the program to read the .bin file and route
data to the different branches of the program for processing. Wish me
luck.
